Current Goal:Contain the escape artists

Description

Our kittens are getting to the age now where they are ready to roam and establish a larger territory than our yard; however we have a lot of strays and dangerous wildlife roaming nearby (racoons, coyotes, foxes) so we'd like to add some kind of cat fencing to the top of our 6ft wooden fence to keep them contained. This typically looks like some kind of netting supported by something that is angled…

We got all of the fence stringers re-supported. Lots of work but feeling better about the fence in general now.

@Jesi the stringers are the horizontal boards of a fence that the pickets are attached to. I've learned a lot of fence terminology lately lol

I’ve never seen those kinds of support blocks below the joined stringers, or at least that shape

Got the material and started working on mounting the hooks to the fence. Quickly realized that the fence stringers that run from post to post that the pickets are nailed to had seen much better days. They for some reason used 2x3's instead of 2x4's and they were splitting at every nail. They had also clearly all shrunk quite a bit and most of them as you can see in the photo were now barely long enough to even reach each post. I knew I should really take this opportunity to shore up the old fence before entire panels start falling off while I'm doing this project, so this endeavor just got a lot more involved! Because of the state of the stringers I knew that just adding some screws was not going to be enough, so I made some blocking to put under each stringer (as seen in the photo) so that if the splitting supports give out they will still be supported underneath and sandwiched in there. So 3 of these for each post. I believe there are 27 posts. This is gonna take some work! It will be nice peace of mind knowing the integrity of the old fence though.

After some more deliberation, decided we'll go with off the shelf fence mounted plant hanger shepherds hooks. The mesh is deer netting from Lowes. Comes in 7ft by 100ft roll, we need about 300ft total, I think if we cut the roll into thirds it should work out to about the right width for 3x 100ft sections. Probably use the compound miter saw to cut the whole roll before unwinding, otherwise I'd be scissor cutting 200ft length for the two cuts....

@Jesi Hahaha yes!! When I was explaining what I meant by cat fencing to someone, he was like "so like a cat prison yard" and I was like well... yeah pretty much! :D Really hoping it turns out a bit more elegant than the standard prison yard aesthetic though....

Sketched out my initial idea for the fencing brackets. I need a lot of them so trying to figure out how to fabricate them myself to save some cost. Thinking like 1" flat steel bar bent in two places, holes drilled to bolt to the fence.

If I did I think I forgot, however you're right the hand written aesthetic is worth it. Very tough with a mouse though lol

Fun fact, you can hold shift down to create straight lines in canvas!
